Compassion Beyond the Hospital Walls: Michele Canto Joins Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter Board

“I understand what the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter does and how I can help make a difference,” Canto said. “Its mission aligns with the work we do through the Thrift Shop and with our ability to be compassionate and help people in our community.”

Michele Canto, Director of Community Ministries, St. Joseph Hospital, has joined the Board of Directors of the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter.

NASHUA, N.H. — St. Joseph Hospital is pleased to announce that Michele Canto, Director of Community Ministries, has joined the Board of Directors of the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter.

The Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter provides food and shelter with dignity to individuals and families in need while promoting a path to independence through direct services and partnerships. For Canto, joining the board is a natural extension of her commitment to serving the Greater Nashua community through her work at St. Joseph Hospital.

“I understand what the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter does and how I can help make a difference,” Canto said. “Its mission aligns with the work we do through the Thrift Shop and with our ability to be compassionate and help people in our community.”

As Director of Community Ministries, Canto oversees the Grey Nuns Thrift Shop, a community resource that provides affordable clothing and essential items to individuals and families in need. The Thrift Shop also partners with local agencies throughout Greater Nashua, including the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter.

The connection between the two organizations is particularly meaningful. Individuals and families who receive services through the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter may receive vouchers to shop at the Grey Nuns Thrift Shop for essential items. Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter clients are among the major users of the Thrift Shop.

Through the Thrift Shop, St. Joseph Hospital continues the spirit of compassion and service established by the Grey Nuns, who founded the hospital more than a century ago. That commitment reflects the hospital’s mission to provide compassionate care that contributes to the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of all in the community.

“I’m looking forward to helping create a stronger connection with volunteers and continuing to build relationships within the community,” Canto said. “It fills my bucket and makes me happy to be able to help people.”

Canto said she is excited about the opportunity to contribute her experience in community ministries to the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter and to help strengthen the connection between the two organizations.

Her appointment reflects a shared commitment to compassion, dignity and service—and to helping individuals and families in the Greater Nashua community meet their basic needs while working toward greater independence.
