United Way provides innovative support for Workforce Development students

NASHUA, N.H. – Nashua Community College and Greater Nashua United Way are developing a new revolving fund for students enrolled in Workforce Development courses at the college.

The Kevin Slattery United Way Workforce Development Critical Needs Fund will address unexpected, short-term financial hardships that may prevent students from continuing their workforce training or completing a credential.

United Way President Mike Apfelberg spoke to the fund’s namesake, “Kevin Slattery was known throughout Greater Nashua for his generosity, community leadership, and unwavering commitment to helping neighbors in need. A longtime supporter of the United Way of Greater Nashua, he believed strongly in removing barriers that prevent people from reaching their full potential.”

Students must be currently enrolled in a Workforce Development program at NCC and actively participating in coursework or training to qualify.

“We are extremely grateful to United Way and the Slattery family for this generous gift,” said President James Keane of NCC. “These funds will positively impact NCC students in our 10-week bootcamp workforce programs, providing emergency financial support for situations that might prohibit a student from completing the program.”

Greater Nashua United Way will provide an initial contribution of $15,000 to establish the Kevin Slattery United Way Workforce Development Critical Needs Fund.

“The establishment of this fund reflects Kevin's enduring legacy of giving back by ensuring that students pursuing workforce training have access to emergency support when life's unexpected challenges arise,” said Apfelberg, “In doing so, it advances the United Way's mission of removing barriers to opportunity and helping individuals gain the education, skills, and stability needed to thrive.”

Award amounts vary from $50-$250 per student and are subject to available funding and approval. What makes this fund especially unique is recipients are asked to repay the grant after securing employment so funds can be recycled to support future Workforce Development students.

President Keane noted most of NCC’s workforce training students begin working in their new industries shortly after graduation, “Our Workforce Development programs have a job placement rate from 86% to 93% post completion.”

Because repayment is voluntary, students who accept funds are not under any financial obligation. However, any repayments received will be returned directly to the Fund to support future NCC Workforce Development students facing similar financial hardships.
