New Hampshire DMV joins national driver record system; Advises public on out-of-state notices

On August 17, 2026, New Hampshire joined 43 other U.S. states in participating in the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) Driver History Record (DHR) platform.

CONCORD, N.H. – The New Hampshire Department of Safety’s Division of Motor Vehicles (NH DMV) is advising residents that official notification letters are being mailed regarding unresolved out-of-state motor vehicle matters following the state's integration into a national record-sharing system.

On August 17, 2026, New Hampshire joined 43 other U.S. states in participating in the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) Driver History Record (DHR) platform. The platform enables real-time and historic electronic transfers of driving records among states, eliminating paper-based documentation delays and enhancing public safety.

As participating states upload historical data into the system, the NH DMV is notified of New Hampshire residents with pending out-of-state court defaults, convictions, suspensions, or other unresolved driver matters. NH RSA 263:56-G requires the NH DMV to notify the NH license holder that their driver's license may be suspended or revoked on the date which is 30 days from the date of notification unless the driver requests an administrative hearing before the suspension or revocation takes effect.

To date, the NH DMV has issued over 700 notification letters to NH license holders. Notification letters will continue to be sent in the coming months as states continue to upload historical records.

Guidance for New Hampshire Residents:

  • Historical Record Scope: Pending out-of-state matters flagged through the DHR system may be recent or may have occurred decades ago.
  • To Resolve the Out-of-State Matter: Residents must contact the specific state DMV cited within their notification letter. The NH DMV cannot clear or resolve violations, tickets, or court matters originating in another jurisdiction.
  • Preventing License Suspension: Pursuant to NH RSA 263:56-G, residents must resolve the out-of-state matter within 30 days of the NH DMV receiving notification to prevent their New Hampshire driving privileges from being suspended. Drivers are strongly encouraged to request an administrative hearing before the suspension or revocation takes effect as instructed in their notification letter.
  • To Contact the NH DMV or Pay Fees: Residents seeking to confirm the legitimacy of a notice, discuss their New Hampshire driver status, or pay applicable license restoration fees can contact the NH DMV directly at (603) 227-4010 to speak with a representative.
