NASHUA, N.H. —Heavy rain caused ponding in low-lying areas Monday as periods of thunderstorms and brief bursts pushed rainfall rates to 1 to 3 inches an hour in some communities that already had received several inches last week.
Flash flood warnings were issued early Monday for southern Hillsborough County by the National Weather Service office in Gray, Maine. The heaviest rain fell in the morning, and the storm continued into the early evening. More than 4 inches of rain had been recorded by day’s end.
Nashua Office of Emergency Management Director Emily Martuscello said flooding was reported in the city’s “usual locations,” noting that a large volume of rain in a short period can overwhelm storm drains. “We have a few roads flooded and there have been reports of minor accidents this morning, but for the most part, no significant damage has occurred,” she said.
A cold front will move through the area tonight with intermittent showers and possible thunderstorms. Lower humidity and more comfortable conditions are expected Tuesday, with heat and humidity returning Wednesday. High temperatures are expected to climb back into the 90s for the rest of the week.
