NASHUA, N.H. - Nashua fire crews knocked down a second‑alarm blaze early Tuesday morning that tore through the upper floors of an eight‑unit residential building on Orange Street, leaving at least two people dead and causing heavy damage throughout the structure, according to Fire Chief Buxton at the scene.
Buxton said the department was notified of the fire at about 3:20 a.m., following reports that the second floor of the building was on fire. Companies were dispatched immediately and arrived to find heavy fire showing from the second‑floor attic area.
On arrival, deputies at the scene ordered a second alarm, bringing additional Nashua fire resources to the incident. Crews mounted an aggressive attack on the blaze in the upper floors.
Victims were removed from the building during the response, with Buxton saying it appeared there were two victims as of Tuesday morning. The building houses eight units, though the chief said it was not yet clear whether each unit had a single occupant.
Buxton said there is no indication, yet of what may have sparked the fire. The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office is expected to take over the investigation, working with county police, and officials were awaiting the marshal’s arrival at the scene.
By the time of Buxton’s interview, firefighters had knocked down the main body of fire, with only small pockets of flames remaining. The chief said the building sustained significant fire, smoke and water damage throughout, affecting both upper and lower floors.
