MANCHESTER, N.H. - Multiple calls for a building fire at Myrtle and Union Streets came into 911 at 3:10 pm.
On arrival firefighters had heavy fire showing from the porches of a hair salon. Crews immediately stretched lines and attempted to knock down the fire, however the wind spread the fire quickly to the interior, including the attic.
A second alarm was requested due to the heavy fire, and crews were also challenged by mechanical issues in one of the fire engines.
Crews worked from the interior while others worked to cut holes in the roof for ventilation.

A third alarm was requested for additional manpower to the scene.
The building had a slate roof which hampered firefighters who had to use saws and tools to remove the slate to access the fire.
People were in the building at the time of the fire, and were able to safely escape without injuries. One cat was later found alive and reunited with its owner.
The fire was eventually brought under control, crews remained at the scene after 6 pm continuing with overhaul.
